We are living through the widespread breakdown of civil discourse over key challenges facing us nationally and worldwide. You can be part of the solution to this problem by joining NYU's first cohort of Berkley Institute Student Fellows for the 2026-27 academic year.

The Berkley Fellows will be a select group of 10 to 15 NYU undergraduates who demonstrate academic excellence, a commitment to engaging across divides, and active involvement in public service:

• You’ll be part of a team of students that plans and participates in our public events, engages in seminars and coursework, and conducts collaborative research.

• As you acquire perceptive listening and dialogue skills, Fellows will help shape the Institute’s plans and activities--and serve as ambassadors for civil discourse at NYU and beyond.

• Fellows must be enrolled as undergraduates at NYU in New York for both the Fall and Spring semesters of the 2026-27 academic year.

• Each Fellow will receive a stipend of $9,000, paid monthly over the nine-month fellowship.

The Changing Lives of Boys and Men is the Institute’s first annual civic challenge. Many of our public events will grapple with an unfolding crisis among young men and boys who are falling behind previous generations of males in health, education, work, and civic engagement. The Institute is bringing together leaders and thinkers who are addressing this crisis from across the political spectrum—Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives—into civil conversation with one another on NYU’s campus. Fellows will jointly write a policy paper related to this year’s civic challenge and present their research at the Institute’s end-of-year symposium.
